Chapter Six

The van slowed down and made a sharp turn down a potholed track. Unity’s body bounced and rolled, tugging on her screaming shoulders and outstretched arms. Her stomach gurgled and grumbled, reminding her that she had never eaten her lunch. Vaguely she remembered noting bits of ant-covered cheese and apple scattered on the porch as she walked out to the van. Breakfast was a long time ago. Glumly, she wondered when she would get to eat and she tried not to think about how hungry she was. Lately, life had been one misery after another.

She was pretty sure that Tate or Rack was in touch with Quill but until they reached their destination, none of them would have a location to transmit. She shied away from the thought of being rescued again in the nude. What was it about these people? Then she speculated about how long it would take the rescuers to reach them.

There wasn’t much information at her disposal. Quill mentioned “his” county but they never got around to a serious exchange of facts so she wasn’t sure what state she was even in. Sourly, she noticed that the temperatures were falling fast. Earlier in the day a warm front had moved in, melting all the snow, but it was definitely no place for a wet, naked woman to be hanging out.

Cudgeling her brain, she tried to remember everything he said. Someone named Penny was taken. He was going to the farm where Penny lived. And there were other girls who had disappeared. Suddenly it occurred to her that no one had mentioned why they were so sure that the girls were alive in captivity instead of dead at the hands of a psycho killer. That would certainly make more sense.

When the van slammed to a stop, the bucket tipped over and rolled to the back of the van. With widening eyes, she watched two chipmunks scurry across the van floor and dive into the pile of refuse behind the driver’s seat. So both Tate and Rack were with her. She felt a little better.

The big blond man hopped out of the van and came around to the back where he opened the door. Cold air rushed in, roughening her skin with a rash of goose bumps. Her nipples shrank to hard little points as she shivered on the icy floor, waiting for him to make a move. Reaching in, he unlocked the cuffs and jerked her close enough to lift her out. With her hands finally free, she wrapped her arms over her chest and rubbed her upper arms. Swiftly she looked around before starting toward the shabby cabin in the small clearing.

It sure doesn’t look like much of a hideout, she thought scornfully as she picked her way around the stones and sticks littering the ground. She heard the van door slam shut and hoped that her rescuers would come soon. A cold breeze blew across the shady clearing, sighing through the spindly pines, and she shook.
